Explanation:
When the reporting verb is in the past i.e said and the direct speech is in the present indefinite tense or simple present tense,
then the indirect speech will change into the past indefinite tense.i.e Present Indefinite Tense into Past Indefinite Tense.
And, if the sentence is interrogative, we use the reporting verbs such as asked, enquired, etc.
