Correct Answer: (6) Six points

Six Points of Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman

The Six Point Movement was a political campaign led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, which called for greater autonomy and economic development for East Pakistan. The movement consisted of six main demands, which were as follows:

  1. The federal structure of government, with maximum autonomy for the provinces
  2. Full powers of government to be vested in the provinces, including control over all departments, except for foreign affairs, defence, and communications
  3. A separate banking system for East Pakistan
  4. A separate currency for East Pakistan
  5. A separate fiscal budget for East Pakistan
  6. Complete control of the central government over the defence and foreign affairs, with a provision for the establishment of a separate defence system for East Pakistan

Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman was a key figure in the independence movement of Bangladesh and the founder of the country. During the rule of Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan in Pakistan, Mujib became prominent for presenting the Six-Point formula, which called for increased autonomy for the provinces at the expense of the central government. The Pakistani government opposed this idea, but Mujib’s Awami League insisted that the Six-Point formula be fully implemented in the new constitution being drafted by the Constituent Assembly. Mujib and his party were inflexible on this issue, even though they sometimes appeared willing to compromise at various points, such as before the 1970 elections. The Six-Point formula was very popular with the people of Bengal and the Awami League pledged to make any necessary sacrifices to see it implemented. This led to civil disobedience and defiance of the central government’s authority by the Awami League, as well as the formation of the freedom fighter group known as the Mukti Bahini. India took advantage of the situation and intervened, ultimately leading to the declaration of an independent Bangladesh by the Awami League. The Six-Point Movement played a crucial role in the War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971 and is considered a major turning point in the country’s history. It helped to mobilize support for the independence of East Pakistan from West Pakistan.

Six Points Movement of Sheikh Mujib in Details

The movement of Shaikh Mujeeb from East Pakistan consisted of six main demands, which are given as under:

1. Federal structure of government, with maximum autonomy for the provinces:

The first demand of the Six Point Movement called for the establishment of a federal structure of government in East Pakistan, with maximum autonomy for the provinces. This would give the provinces greater control over their own affairs and would allow them to make their own decisions about issues such as education, healthcare, and economic development.

2. Full powers of government to be vested in the provinces, including control over all departments, except for foreign affairs, defence, and communications:

The second demand of the Six Point Movement called for the full powers of government to be vested in the provinces, including control over all departments, except for foreign affairs, defence, and communications. This would give the provinces greater control over their own affairs, and would allow them to make their own decisions about issues such as education, healthcare, and economic development.

3. A separate banking system for East Pakistan:

The third demand of the Six Point Movement called for the establishment of a separate banking system for East Pakistan. This would give East Pakistan more control over its own financial affairs and would allow it to develop its own banking sector, which could be used to finance economic development projects in the region.

4. A separate currency for East Pakistan:

The fourth demand of the Six Point Movement called for the establishment of a separate currency for East Pakistan. This would give East Pakistan more control over its own financial affairs and would allow it to develop its own monetary policy, which could be used to finance economic development projects in the region.

5. A separate fiscal budget for East Pakistan:

The fifth demand of the Six Point Movement called for the establishment of a separate fiscal budget for East Pakistan. This would give East Pakistan more control over its own financial affairs and would allow it to develop its own budget, which could be used to finance economic development projects in the region.

6. Complete control of the central government over the defence and foreign affairs, with a provision for the establishment of a separate defence system for East Pakistan:

The sixth demand of the Six Point Movement called for the central government to have complete control over the defence and foreign affairs, with a provision for the establishment of a separate defence system for East Pakistan. This would allow East Pakistan to have more control over its own security affairs and would give it the ability to develop its own defence capabilities.
