The heart of the matter lay in the Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917, where the British government expressed intent to establish “a national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine while assuring that “nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.” However, this commitment remained unfulfilled, and what followed was the Nakba—the catastrophe that accompanied the birth of Israel in May 1948. It led to the displacement of over 700,000 native Palestinians from their homes.
The issue encompasses territorial, ideological, and geopolitical dimensions. Territorially, Palestinians consider this land their home, rooted in a history dating back millennia. This is a land that has changed hands between the Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, and the British. It was the Zionist movement that brought Jews from Europe to displace the local population, resulting in the Nakba.
Ideologically, this land is of profound significance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a revered site for Muslims, and holds deep traditional and religious ties for Jews.
Geopolitically, the establishment of Israel in Palestine was a British initiative, and over the past seven decades, the US and the UK have treated Israel as a linchpin of their Middle East policy.
Despite attempts at peace, such as the Arab-Israeli wars of 1948, 1967, and 1973, as well as Palestinian resistance, including the Intifadas, peace remains elusive. Internal discord between Fatah and Hamas within Palestinian ranks further complicates their cause.
The peace process, including the Oslo Accords of the 1990s and more recently the Abraham Accords, which saw countries like the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco normalizing relations with Israel, has not led to a comprehensive resolution.
The attack by Hamas on Israel on Octoberober 7th had repercussions, halting the normalization of Arab-Israel relations. The indiscriminate bombing by Israel, especially in Gaza, and the resultant civilian casualties, including children, have garnered international attention. The UN Security Council attempted to secure a ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Gaza, but the US’s veto power halted these efforts.
The unwavering support of the US for Israel has emboldened the latter, leading to actions condemned as war crimes—besieging Gaza, depriving its residents of essentials, and targeting civilian facilities. These actions have solidified Palestinian resolve to resist.
The date Octoberober 7th symbolizes a chapter in the ongoing saga of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the repercussions continue to echo through the pages of history.
