Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, has called on the U.S. to supply small arms and modern equipment to support Pakistan’s new counter-terrorism initiative, Operation Azm-i-Istehkam. This operation, aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, was approved on June 22 during a meeting of the National Action Plan’s apex committee. The National Action Plan, originally approved in 2014, is a comprehensive strategy to eliminate militancy in the country. Ambassador Khan highlighted that Operation Azm-i-Istehkam includes doctrinal, societal, and operational components, with the first two already in progress and the third set to begin soon. He made these remarks at the Wilson Centre in Washington, addressing U.S. policymakers, scholars, and corporate leaders. The renewed counter-terrorism effort comes in response to increased militant activities by the Tehreek-i-Taliban in Pakistan.
Pakistan is facing a growing threat from the TTP, especially after the U.S. left Afghanistan. In response, the government announced a new counterterrorism campaign, Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, which might involve another big military operation in KP. However, many people in KP are worried because past military actions caused a lot of suffering. There have been protests, and both the KP government and major political parties oppose the new operation. The TTP is more active now, increasing attacks and imposing their rules while military action is needed, it should include efforts to gain public support, compensate those affected by previous operations, and focus on long-term solutions like strengthening the police. Success depends on cooperation between the federal and KP governments and local leaders.
